Lifestyle newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed, natural, and centered around your real life at home. The goal is to capture genuine moments — your connection, your routines, and all the little details that make this season special. You don’t need a perfect house or a perfectly calm baby. A little preparation goes a long way, though, and helps the session feel smooth and stress-free.
Choose One to Two Rooms with Good Natural Light
We typically use one or two areas of your home for the session. Look for rooms that receive the best natural light during the time of day we’re scheduled to shoot. Soft window light creates the most beautiful and flattering images.
Great room options include:
- The nursery (always a favorite and very meaningful)
- The master bedroom
- A living or family room with large windows
If you’re unsure which spaces will work best, don’t worry — I can help decide when I arrive. Just open blinds and curtains so we can easily see the available light.
Tidy and Simplify the Space
Your home does not need to be spotless. Truly. Lifestyle sessions are about connection, not perfection. That said, a quick declutter of the areas we plan to use makes a big difference in photos.
Focus on:
- Clearing nightstands and dressers
- Removing extra items from floors near windows
- Simplifying bedding and couches
- Putting away cords, bottles, and packaging
Think “clean and simple” rather than “deep cleaned.” A 10–15 minute tidy of the chosen rooms is usually enough.
Keep the House Warm
Newborns are happiest when they’re warm and cozy — especially if we’ll be doing wrapped or lightly clothed photos. If the house runs cool, consider turning up the heat a couple degrees about 30 minutes before the session. A warm environment helps baby stay sleepy and content.
Feed Baby Right Before the Session
A full baby is a happy, relaxed baby. Try to plan a feeding right before the session start time if possible. This helps baby settle into sleep or calm alertness, which both photograph beautifully. If baby needs to eat again during the session, that’s completely okay — we will always pause as needed.
Gather Meaningful Personal Items
Personal touches make your images more unique and sentimental. If you have special items picked out, keep them nearby so we can include them naturally in your session.
Ideas include:
- A custom swaddle or blanket with baby’s name
- Hospital name signs or announcement plaques
- A special stuffed animal or heirloom blanket
- Family quilts or handmade items
- Meaningful gifts from grandparents or friends
I also bring wraps, outfits, and simple props to choose from, but incorporating your own items always adds an extra layer of story and connection to your photos.
Keep Expectations Gentle
Lifestyle newborn sessions are baby-led and relaxed. There is no pressure for perfect behavior. We allow time for soothing, feeding, diaper changes, and snuggles. The calm, in-between moments are often the most beautiful ones to capture.
With just a little preparation and a flexible mindset, your session will feel easy and natural — and the images will reflect this special season exactly as it is.
